Faculty and staff honored with 2006 COB awards

 

2006 award winners
Hal Koenig, Ray Brooks, Justin Craig, Madeleine Romero, David Baldridge, Malcolm LeMay, Jim McAlexander and Zhaohui Wu

Honoring superior faculty performance, four prestigious Newcomb Fellowships were awarded by College of Business Dean Ilene Kleinsorge. The Newcomb Fellowships were established by Bernie Newcomb, Class of '65 and co-founder of E*Trade, through a generous endowment. 2006 Newcomb Fellows are Ray Brooks, professor of finance; Justin Craig, assistant professor of entrepreneurship; Hal Koenig, associate professor of marketing and Jim McAlexander, professor of marketing; and Malcolm LeMay, director of operations.

Brooks' work with the Harley and Brigitte Smith Lifetime Financial Planning Contest and the Finance/Investment Club earned him the honor of being Newcomb Fellow. He's overseen 500 submitted plans and the awarding of more than $15,000 in prize money for the contest. He guided the Investment Club which has raised nearly $75,000 dedicated solely to a student investment portfolio. Brooks also sole-authored a textbook: "Financial Management: A Modern Approach."

Craig garnered a Newcomb Fellow award for his role in establishing the informal curriculum as part of the Austin Entrepreneurship Program. He designed and delivered the AEP-T.I.C.K., a web-based portfolio that enables students to track their entrepreneurial competencies. He advised students in setting up the OSU chapter of the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), continues his popular Wednesday night seminars, helped facilitate the E-Challenge and the Wall Street Challenge and more. He continually mentors students and discusses their business ideas.

Koenig and McAlexander shared their Newcomb Fellow award. Through their diligence and persistence, they established the Close to the Customer Project (C2C), a student-based market research operation providing a hands-on learning opportunity for students and a vital component to the Austin Entrepreneurship Program. The C2C Project currently comprises more than $60,000 in contracts from external entities and also received a $26,000 grant from the Kauffman Foundation. Their Journal of Marketing "Building Brand Community" research is among the Top 10 most cited scholarly works.

LeMay was named a Newcomb Fellow for his role in the college receiving the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation. He has also been instrumental in upgrading the public spaces in the Bexell Hall facility and promoting college alumni for university awards.

Winners of the Business Advisory Council Awards, including the Byron L. Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Outstanding Faculty Service Award and the Exemplary Service Award, were presented by College of Business Department Chair Jack Drexler. The Excellence in Scholarship Award was presented to two individuals by Assistant Professor of Accounting Dennis Caplan.

Madeleine Romero tookhome the Bryon L. Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizing her exceptionally high teaching evaluations, her role in developing instruction for non-business majors for BA 215 and her high regard in teaching University Honors College courses.

Hal Koenig, associate professor of marketing and marketing option coordinator, won the Outstanding Faculty Service Award for involvement in establishing the C2C Project and for his sustained contributions to University, College and Departmental life. Koenig served commendably as chair of the OSU Faculty Senate's Graduate Council and on the Graduate School Committee and the Graduate Program Review Committee.

The Exemplary Service Award was given to Malcolm Lemay for performance excellence and service in a non-teaching role. Lemay was recognized for his role in the college receiving AACSB accreditation.

The Excellence in Scholarship Award was given to Zhaohui Wu, assistant professor of management and David Baldridge, assistant professor of management, recognizing academic faculty research excellence.

Wu was published in the Journal of Operations Management, a leading publication in the field of production and operations management. His paper, "Supplier-Supplier Relationships in the Buyer-Supplier Triad: Building Theories for Eight Case Studies" was recently selected as one of the best three articles in that publication for 2005 and for the last quarter of 2005, was the fifth most frequently downloaded article from the publication's entire database.

Baldridge has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals including the Academy of Management Review and the Journal of Management. Most recently, Baldridge's article titled "Are Managers from Mars and Academicians from Venus? Toward an Understanding of the Relationship between Academic Quality and Practical Relevance," appeared in the Strategic Management Journal.

Winner of the Corvallis Gazette-Times Faculty Leadership Award presented by Corvallis Gazette-Times publisher Mike McInally was Justin Craig. As the entrepreneurship faculty-in-residence at Weatherford Hall, Craig has been instrumental in the Austin Entrepreneurship Program gaining credibility as a start-up with impact. He also participates in the community, most recently speaking at a Chamber of Commerce Corporate Roundtable event.
