Professor Down currently has three research areas of interest: a study of the VC industry in Oregon; examining how firms achieve the right balance of strategic flexibility in their planning systems; and studying the effectiveness of university commercialization of technology efforts. Down’s Ph.D. is in Strategic Management from the University of Washington. He also earned an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State. He has served as a visiting scholar in Europe and Southeast Asia. His primary areas of expertise are Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Finance, especially as applied to technology oriented businesses and industries. A panel of journal editors recently nominated one of his articles for the prestigious Academy of Management Journal Best Paper Award. A great deal of Jon’s time during the past several years has been devoted to leading the successful development of the largest residential entrepreneurship program in the country; the Austin Entrepreneurship Program at Weatherford Hall. In addition to his academic experience, Jon has had management roles at Westinghouse Electric Company, Precision Castparts Corporation and with early stage companies. The courses Professor Down has taught or teaches include: Strategic Management/Business Policy; Advanced Strategic Management (MBA); Organization Theory & Design; Business, Government and Society; Venture Finance; Principles of Finance; and Executive Education short courses.
