Business Student to Undergo Internship with Citigroup

By Abby P. Metzger

Jonathon MoravecJonathan Moravec, a junior majoring in business with a finance option, was selected to participate in a ten-week summer internship program with Citigroup. He was one of 35 students to receive an internship and competed against 2200 applicants, many from Ivy-league schools.

The internship will take place late May to early August, and Moravec will have the opportunity to sit on the trading floor with ten different departments.

"Although I will have to pay my dues, my main duty will be to sit and ask questions to get a better understanding of what each group does. Other duties range depending on the department but will include research, acquiring data and analyst opinions, etc," he said.

Before securing the position, Moravec had to apply online and underwent several interviews. He flew out to New York for one interview and sat on the trading floor while the Citigroup director and a VP asked him questions.

"I was being asked questions while [investors] were trading millions of dollars in stocks," he said.

Moravec made a favorable impression and was invited back to New York for final-round interviews. The interview took two hours, and a panel of three Citigroup affiliates drilled him on everything from macroeconomic theory to current market events. "I returned home and was contacted the following Monday morning with a job offer for the summer internship program," he recalled.

Brenda Sallee, the College of Business' head academic advisor, worked with Moravec to prepare him for the internship. "We strategized how to get the right courses in his schedule," she said. "I also looked over his resume and suggested he talk to Gene Young on our faculty for other suggestions about how to represent himself in person, phone interview, and on paper."

Aside from taking appropriate coursework, Moravec said his connections with College of Business faculty facilitated the process.

"My relationships with finance faculty, COB advisors, and Dean Kleinsorge have also been extremely beneficial, providing me with great advice and guidance," he said.

After the internship, Moravec hopes Citigroup offers him a full-time position. "Citi gives job offers to a significant amount of their interns at the end of summer," he said. "Besides the job, this internship will give me an education and experience that I could not receive anywhere else."
