Business Student Learned from Internship with Mariners
By Jennifer Kroll

Chris Yost, a senior majoring in Business with an option in Management, spent the summer working for the Seattle Mariners. After realizing that his career desires lay in the field of major league baseball, he decided to apply for the internship.
"To get the internship I had to send in a cover letter and resumé. It also helped that I knew the Human Resources Manager. I'd like to say that I got the internship because of my outstanding resumé and cover letter, but in reality I got it because of who I know," remarked Yost, "It is very important to establish connections."
One of the things he had hoped to do was make a lot of connections with Mariners employees - which he did! He was able to spend time with an owner, the president, general manager, CFO, and more. In doing so, he gained a true understanding of the business side of running a sports team.
Among the many projects he worked on, Yost coordinated two important events. One was a small luncheon, and the other was a much larger autograph session that included over 300 participants. He experienced first hand the many details that go into organizing a successful event. "I guess one thing I really learned was how to work with the other departments to make the overall project work," Yost said.
The internship provided many perks as well. Yost interacted with the players on a daily basis, attended a party at one of the owner's homes, and took batting practice on Safeco Field. One thing that surprised Yost the most was how comfortable and friendly the work environment was.
Yost remarked about his time with the Mariners, "This internship made me want to work for the Mariners even more than I thought I did. I never had a boring day going into Safeco field to work. I think the people really made the difference for me. Each and every day I went into work wanting to interact with others!" He continued, "This internship was a really great opportunity for me. It was a great summer and I hope to be back there after I am done with my final college term this fall!" |
