Food:

I'll warn you now...if you are vegetarian, allergic to soy products or MSG, eating will be a real challenge for you.  It will either be a challenge or just real expensive.  It's not that you cannot find any all vegetarian Chinese restaurants, there are some.   They are few and far between though, that is for sure.  Chances are it will prove difficult to find a local who is vegetarian.  It's just not part of their culture.  Also, many Chinese dishes come covered in soy based sauces.  As for MSG, if you can eat it in small amounts and be ok, you should be fine.  Just be wary of soups, because where the most MSG shows up is in the broth of soups.  You may notice in the canteen that even the locals who order large bowls of soup will not drink the broth, but only eat the noodles, meat, and vegetables.  This is because they generally don't want to consume all the MSG.

If you ever wanted to try lots of different kinds of  foods, Hong Kong is the place to do it.  All of Hong Kong is famous for seafood.  Restaurants that let you pick your seafood from live tanks abound.  There are also restaurants featuring Vietnamese, Indian, Thai, and  many other ethnic cuisines that proliferate the city.

One last word of advice...practice your chop stick skills before you go!
