Health Insurance

Because health care in the U.S. is very expensive, all international students are required to have health insurance throughout their program of study.

While you are a student at Oregon State University, you will be automatically billed for the ASOSU (Associated Students of Oregon State University) health insurance plan. However, if you have purchased alternative insurance in your home country, and if it meets OSU's minimum requirements, you can avoid ASOSU insurance charges by filing a waiver form at Student Health Services. You must then provide a copy of the insurance identification card with valid dates of coverage to the Student Health Services.

The minimum coverage OSU accepts is:

  • $250,000 major medical (per accident or illness)
  • $10,000 medical evacuation
  • $7,500 repatriation of remains

Note that the deductible may not be greater than $500 per accident or illness and the co-payment (your costs) may not be greater than 25 percent. Questions regarding procedures about the waiver process and automatic billing for health insurance should be directed to the Student Health Services Center Student.Insurance@orst.edu.

Basic Health Insurance Terms

Co-insurance/Co-payment: The portion of a covered expense that must be paid by the insured. Usually expressed in a percentage. For example, if the insurance policy pays 80% of covered charges, the co-payment is 20%.
Deductible: The initial portion of a covered expense, which must be paid by the insured before the insurance policy pays its part of the expense.
Insured: The individual on which the insurance policy is issued and written.
Insurer: A company licensed by a government entity to transact the business of insurance.
Major Medical: Policy designed to supplement expenses resulting in catastrophic or prolonged illnesses or injuries.
Medical Evacuation: The process of transporting the insured, upon the recommendation of an attending physician, to his or her home country or to a facility operated pursuant to the law for care and treatment of injured or ill persons.
Repatriation: The cost of preparation and transportation of the insured's remains to his or her home country.
