Lund, Sweden

The Oregon State University College of Business offers a one-term exchange program at Lund University, Sweden.

Background

Lund, one of the oldest cities in Sweden, was established in the late 10th century and was recognized as the religious, political, commercial, cultural and educational center for all of Sweden. Today Lund boasts a population of approximately 95,000 and is greatly influenced by the presence of the University and it’s 36,000 students. Characterized as a “city of youth”, Lund is located Southwest of Stockholm.  (Click here for a two minute video walking tour of Lund.)

Lund University was established in 1666 and is the largest institution of higher education and research in Scandinavia. About 1,000 foreign students study at Lund University each year and approximately 250 of these foreign students are with the School of Economics and Management. Education is closely tied to ongoing research, and the teaching faculty is composed of many of the top researchers in the country.

The program at Lund helps prepare students for careers in an international setting. Exchange students have an opportunity to gain insights into Swedish approaches to current international issues. Students also use case studies to learn problem-solving skills with students from all over the world.

Academic Program

Fall term classes at Lund University typically begin the first of September, and students return to the state in mid-December.  Students who complete the study program will earn their International Business Option. All courses are taught in English. An example of course titles and their OSU credit equivalent are as follows:

  • BA 497 International Marketing (4)
  • BA 445 international Financial Management (4)
  • BA 446 International Management (4)
  • BA 406 International Seminars (5)

Eligibility

The program is open to all OSU Business majors who have a 2.75 GPA in the College of Business retention courses and have attained senior or late junior status at the time of participation. Pre-requisite courses include:

  • BA 340, Finance
  • BA 347, International Business
  • BA 352, Organizational Behavior
  • BA 390, Marketing

All applicants will be interviewed and acceptance will be based on academic preparation, personal motivation, and perceived adaptability.

Living Arrangements

Housing is arranged during our spring term orientation class.  Facilities are limited, and students will be instructed to register for housing online on a specific date.  Students who do not register for housing on time may have to finalize their arrangements once they arrive in Sweden.

Cost

Students pay one term tuition to OSU for their semester at Lund University. OSU Student fees are waived.  There is a $50 non-refundable application fee submitted with application and a $250 non-refundable program fee payable after acceptance.  Living expenses are generally a little higher than in Oregon. Current financial estimates can be found on the budgets page. The main additional cost is airfare. A group rate will be offered for exchange participants.

Costs will vary depending on the exchange rate for U.S. dollars at the time of the program and personal spending habits. This list does not include money for travel through Sweden and other countries.

Financial Aid

Most financial aid that students are eligible to receive (Guaranteed Student Loans, Pell Grants, Veteran's benefits) is applicable to this exchange program.  FINANCIAL AID IS NOT AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS UNTIL CLASSES BEGIN AT OSU, so students must budget accordingly. There are also study abroad scholarships available for those students with excellent academic records. Contact the Office of International Education (Snell Hall-444, 737-3006) for more information.   College of Business Scholarships are also available.

Application

Applicants must submit the following to the College of Business:

  • A completed application for admission to the Arthur Stonehill International Business Exchange Program (available in 214 Bexell Hall)
  • Two reference forms
  • Autobiographical essay
  • Resume
  • Cover letter
  • A $50 application fee

The APPLICATION DEADLINE is January 15.  If the 15th falls over a weekend, the deadline is the following Monday.

Students chosen for the exchange program will participate in a mandatory orientation class Spring Term prior to departure.
