A postbaccalaureate Accounting Certificate is intended for those who wish to prepare for careers in professional accounting. The Certificate is available to those holding a baccalaureate degree that did not involve specialized accounting education. The required accounting course work is identical to that required for the B.S. in Business Administration with an option in accounting. In addition, certain business and related elective courses are recommended. [Other options for the Postbaccalaureate degrees in business are also available.
Admission to the Program

1. Admission requirements

The Certificate program is open to individuals who have a baccalaureate degree in an academic area other than accounting. These persons must be admitted to Oregon State University with post baccalaureate status and be admitted into the program by the College of Business.

2. Prerequisite courses

Succesful completion of BA 131 [Business Productivity Software], BA 271 [Information Technology in Business], BA 211 [Financial Accounting], and BA 213 [Managerial Accounting] with a grade of "C-" or better in each of those courses and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in BA 211 and BA 213.

The Office of Student Services will judge the equivalency, in terms of content and credit hours, of these courses if they were completed at another college or university.

Suggested Elective Courses

In addition to the required accounting course work, it is strongly recommended that students supplement their course work with associated courses. Those intending to sit for the CPA exam should consider courses in economics, finance, and business law; those wishing to emphasize industry accounting should consider courses in MIS, finance, organizational behavior, decision analysis, and modeling; and those interested in careers in non-business entities should consider courses in economics and political science.

It is recommended that students complete those elective courses most relevant to their career goals.

Admission Into Accounting Courses

  • Students must be at the appropriate class standing level and in compliance with COB academic standards.
  • Admission to all accounting courses requires successfully completing all specified course prerequisites.
  • All accounting option course work must be taken on a graded [A-F] basis. A grade of "C-" or better is required for each course taken in the accounting option. Failure to achieve a grade of "C-" or better in a particular course will preclude the student from enrolling in a following course for which the particular course is prerequisite, i.e., students will be disenrolled from those courses without formal notification.
  • In order to matriculate through the accounting option, students must complete BA 317, BA 318, and BA 319 with a grade of "C-" or better in each of those courses and a GPA of no less than 2.0 in those courses. In addition, students must complete BA 321 and BA 422 with a grade of "C-" or better in each of those courses and a GPA of no less than 2.0 in those courses.

Completion Time

The Certificate program will take approximately two academic years as a part-time student to complete.
