College of Business Academic Progression Standards
All students who declared a business major after Apr 1, 2006 will be evaluated using the Academic Progression Standards described below. Students who were declared business majors prior to Apr 1, 2006 may choose to use the Academic Retention Standards that were in effect when they declared the business major.
Academic Probation BA Core Computation S/U Grades
Academic progression standards are the minimum grade requirements a student must earn in order to graduate. OSU has minimum GPA standards. The College of Business (COB) has its own GPA requirements and standards. All majors must satisfy both OSU and business requirements.
What are the COB Progression Standards?
- Minimum grade of C- or better in all classes in business program.
- Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA overall in COB GPA.
- Over fifty percent of your business program and discipline classes must be taken at OSU.
- No incomplete (I) grades in any classes in the business program.
- Make satisfactory progress toward the completion of your business degree in a timely fashion.
What business program classes are "counted" toward completion of the College of Business academic progression standards?
- All OSU Business Administration program classes (BA/ACTG) taken for major and elective credit
- Transfer grades in business program classes are not used to calculate your overall COB GPA. They are used only to satisfy business requirements and to compute your COB Application GPA.

What happens if I get a bad grade in a business program class?
- You can repeat a class only one time.
- COB will use the most recent grade to calculate your business GPA, even if it is lower!
- If you repeat a business class at another school, the grade will not be used to calculate your business GPA.
- TIP: If you do poorly in a class here at OSU, you must retake it here at OSU.

Academic Actions within the COB are intended to notify students that they are not making satisfactory progress toward completing their business degree requirements. The academic standing of each student is evaluated at the end of every term, and the Academic Action pertains to the next term in which the student registers for classes.
ACADEMIC WARNING
Warnings are given for any of the following reasons:
• A ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade in a business program class.
• Incomplete in class in the Pre-business core.
• Small drop below 2.5 in business GPA (1-2 grade points).
• Not completing business courses in a timely fashion.
ACADEMIC PROBATION
If you have larger deviations from the COB progression standards than those defined for a warning, or if you continue to be out of compliance with any of the COB progression standards following a warning, you could be placed on probation. You will need to take specific action to correct the problem(s).
CONTINUED ACADEMIC PROBATION
Probation can be continued if you are still out of compliance but are taking steps to correct the problem(s).
ACADEMIC SUSPENSION
• If you don’t take steps to become compliant with the COB progression standards (such as retaking a class you have failed), or you are not making progress in correcting your academic problems, you could be suspended from ProSchool or from the College of Business and transferred over to the University Exploratory Studies Program (UESP) to help you select a new major.
• If suspended, you must wait a minimum of one term before you reapply for admission to the College of Business. If you were suspended out of the COB and qualify for readmission, you must start in Pre-Business and reapply to ProSchool.
• If academic standards/requirements have changed since you were last a business major, you must follow the newer standards/requirements.
Prior to Apr 1, 2006, business majors were required to meet Academic Retention Standards. The major differences between these retention standards and the progression standards described above are:
- Incomplete grades will remain on the student's transcript (they will not be automatically changed to a grade of 'F' after one year).
- A minimum GPA of 2.5 must be achieved within each progression group defined above as well as maintaining a minimum overall business GPA of 2.5. That is, you must have a GPA of 2.5 in all courses within the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior progression groups.
- A minimum grade of C- or better is not required in all classes in the business program. You may have 'D' grades in business classes as long as the GPA within the progression group is above the 2.5 minimum.
Students who were declared business majors prior to Apr 1, 2006 may use the standard that best meets their individual situation. |
