Arhus, Denmark

The Oregon State University College of Business offers a one-term exchange program at the Århus School of Business, University of Aarhus.

Background

Denmark is an ideal place to study business. As a member of the European Union (EU) and as one of the Scandinavian countries, Denmark is a vital link between two important market areas. Denmark continues to be ranked as one of the world's richest countries, and its educational and industrial stature are held in high esteem internationally.

Århus is Denmark's second largest city and offers an extensive opportunity to experience Danish culture and history. It is located on the coast of Jutland (the mainland), approximately 4 hours by train and ferry from Copenhagen. Originally a Viking settlement, Århus now boasts a population of 500,000 and is the center of Jutland's university, business and cultural life. The city is a clean, comfortable, safe environment in which to live.

The Århus School of Business enrolls 6,000 students in areas of business administration, economics, and modern languages. Students come to Århus from many other countries in Europe, Asia...or other continents, giving a new perspective to the study of international business. Courses offered by the exchange program are designed specifically for business students studying business in a foreign environment.

Academic Program

The Århus academic program runs from late August to mid-December. Accepted students will follow a study program which will fill all requirements for an International Business Option (if completed). All courses are taught in English. An example of course titles and their OSU credit equivalent are as follows:

  • BA 407 International Organizations and Markets (3)
  • BA 497 International Marketing (4)
  • BA 440 Corporate Finance (4)
  • BA 446 International Management (4)
  • BA 406 International Marketing Seminar (2)

Eligibility

The program is open to all OSU Business majors who have a 2.75 GPA in the College of Business retention courses and who have attained senior or late junior status at the time of participation. Pre-requisite courses include:

  • BA 340, Finance
  • BA 347, International Business
  • BA 352, Organizational Behavior
  • BA 390, Marketing

All applicants will be interviewed and acceptance will be based on academic preparation, personal motivation, and perceived adaptability.

Living Arrangements

Students live in Danish Kollegiums which are comparable to small apartments with shared kitchen facilities. Housing is arranged by the ÅrhusSchool of Business.

Cost

Students pay fall-term tuition to OSU for the autumn semester at Århus School of Business.  Student fees are waived. There is a $50 non-refundable application fee submitted with application and a $250 non-refundable program fee payable after acceptance. Living expenses are generally a little higher than in Oregon. The main additional cost is airfare. A group rate is available for exchange participants. A round-trip flight group rate will be available from Portland to Århus. Students may negotiate some flexibility on the arrival date. Costs will vary depending on the exchange rate for U.S. dollars at the time of the program and participant's personal spending habits. Expenses for personal travel are the responsibility of the student.

Financial Aid

Most financial aid that students are eligible to receive (Guaranteed Student Loans, Pell Grants, Veteran's benefits) is applicable to this exchange program. FINANCIAL AID IS NOT AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS UNTIL CLASSSES BEGIN AT OSU, so students must budget accordingly.  There are also study abroad scholarships available for those students with excellent academic records. Contact the Office of International Education (444 Snell Hall, 737-3006) for more information. College of Business Scholarships are also available.

Application

Applicants must submit the following to the College of Business:

  • A completed application for admission to the Arthur Stonehill International Business Exchange Program (available in 214 Bexell Hall)
  • Two reference forms
  • Reponse to two essay questions
  • A $50 application fee

The APPLICATION DEADLINE is January 15. If the 15th falls on a weekend, the deadline is the following Monday.

Interviews for qualified students will take place during Winter Term, and involve a short, informal presentation by the applicant on a pre-selected topic.

Students chosen for the exchange program will participate in a mandatory orientation class Spring Term prior to departure.
