Personal ID:
As a general rule, you should always carry your passport with you. While abroad, it is your only valid form of personal identification. Even the student ID card that you get from City University is not good enough in most cases. There is a chance, however very small, that you may be picked at random by local authorities to provide your ID for inspection. Local police will sometimes randomly stop people in public to make sure they are in the country legally. No one in our exchange group was ever stopped, but I did see local people get asked at random to have their Hong Kong Identity Cards inspected.
Keep in mind that bouncers at bars and clubs may ask you to produce ID, and they will only accept valid passports from foreigners.
I would venture to say that your passport is more likely to be a target for pick pockets that your wallet. When carrying your passport, always be mindful of where it is. You may consider carrying your wallet and your passport in different locations on your body. It is also a good idea to make photo copies of the pages of your passport that contain pertinent information, and to keep those safe in your room in case something does happen to your passport. |
