Plane Tickets:
There are generally two routes from Portland International Airport to Hong Kong International Airport. One is to fly from PDX to Vancouver, B.C., then from Vancouver to Hong Kong. The other route is to fly from PDX to San Francisco, then from San Francisco to Hong Kong. If you or anyone in your family has frequent flyer miles you can use you may need to plan your route based on any restrictions they pose. You can also search for deals in the newspaper or online.
I personally suggest you check out Council Travel. Council Travel is a travel agency that caters specifically to students and academics. I saved more that $200 over the lowest rate I found online at sites like Travelocity. The sooner you book your tickets the sooner you can ask to reserve a seat on the plane. It's about a 14 or 15 hour flight from Vancouver to Hong Kong. I suggest asking to reserve an aisle or bulkhead seat to give you some leg room. Ask if you can reserve a seat for your return flight at the same time you are making departing flight reservations.
Note: Checking Your Baggage
Once you find out what airlines you will be flying on, you'll want to call and see how they will handle your baggage between connecting flights. Since "September 11" you may be required to pick up your luggage at your intermediate stops and have them rechecked before continuing on to your destination. You may be able to check your bags "all the way through" to your destination. This means they are automatically moved to your connecting plane and you can take the connecting flight jet-way and not have to pass through customs again |
