Demographics & Mapping Project Assistant – Deadline: Monday March 2, 2010.

About Neighbors West-Northwest:

The Neighbors West-Northwest (NWNW) Coalition promotes direct participation in grassroots democracy by supporting community efforts at the neighborhood level. Our services advance the voices of our constituent Neighborhood Associations as they strive to create livable, sustainable, and equitable communities. NWNW supports 12 all-volunteer neighborhood associations in inner SW and NW Portland, including Arlington Heights, Forest Park, Goose Hollow, Hillside, Linnton, NW District, NW Heights, NW Industrial, Old Town Chinatown, the Pearl District, Portland Downtown, and Sylvan Highlands.

Job Responsibilities:

*Meet with neighborhood volunteers to learn about local projects to identify maps that support their efforts

*Identify data sources that could produce maps to support neighborhood organizing efforts

*Create base set of maps from membership and demographic statistics

*Provide a report for each neighborhood that connects asset-based community development and mapping projects into current volunteer efforts and potential projects (including projects that could improve outreach efforts and neighborhood inclusiveness)

*Train volunteers in the use of mapping tools

*Other duties as assigned

Internship Description:

The intern will work directly with NWNW staff members to explore how mapping can benefit Neighborhood Associations. The intern will explore mapping opportunities that will assist neighborhood outreach efforts, increasing neighborhood inclusiveness and support existing neighborhood committee projects. This includes summarizing low- and no-cost statistical and mapping software, layers, etc. to help NWNW prepare for the upcoming 2010 census. The intern will complete at least one project-based mapping project using available data.

Desired Employment Start Date: Monday March 30, 2010

Desired Employment End Date: July 2010 (flexible)

Hours per Week: 15-20 (flexible)

Salary: Unpaid

Location: NW Portland, Oregon
