Web Developer Posistion

POSITION PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

This position has the purpose of developing a social networking website that engineers can use to collaborate on engineering projects. The goal of the project is to promote open, collaborative design by creating a web portal similar to SourceForge or GitHub but geared toward the engineering design world. The position will be funded by a grant for Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), funded by an NSF project entitled “VOICED: Virtual Organization for the Innovation in Conceptual Engineering Design”, a project looking to promote innovation in engineering design. The position will be working closely with a team consisting of professors and graduate students from 5 universities that have extensive careers in engineering design, hence providing the undergraduate student with an opportunity to gain experience in research.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The project needs a junior-level undergraduate student in EECS. The ideal candidate should be proficient or have the ability to quickly learn the following programming languages, web apps and computer systems:

  • Linux OS
  • Apache
  • MySQL
  • PHP
  • MediaWiki (or variants)
  • Vanilla
  • Elgg
  • RSS
  • OpenID
  • Blogs
  • forums

In addition, the candidate should be familiar with website development and the tools that are necessary to create robust and useful websites. This includes having the ability to understand the basics of website layout and the importance of ergonomics in web design.

Familiarity with the basic philosophy of the open source software movement and why it has proven so successful is a plus.

TIME COMMITMENT AND SALARY:

5-10 hours/week (negotiable), Winter-Summer 2009
$10/hour
