Sol is a Multicultural Support and Retention Office that supports Oregon state University in meeting the specific academic, social, and cultural needs of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans. Queer, and Questioning, Intersex, and allied (LGBTQQIA) students, prospective and current. Retention of LGBTQQIA groups who educate and raise awareness about sexual and affectional orientation and identities is an essential component of the program. Equally important is the goal of fostering relationships with Corvallis and across surrounding communities to help build relationships through which LBGTQQIA students can thrive as they purse future educational, career, and life goals.
By utilizing their leadership, sensitivity, organizational skills, peer counseling, crisis intervention, communication, and activities planning skills, Sol plays a key role in the furthering the campus diversity development and Sols’ goals.
The Internal Coordinator must be committed to the development of a multicultural community in the Cultural Centers at Oregon State University. Internal Coordinators are role models for the OSU community; they must be active in pursuing self-education regarding issues of sexism, racism, heterosexism, classism, ageism, ableism, and religious intolerance
PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT
- Internal Coordinators will be selected by March 13, 2009. Employment is contingent on a student’s academic standing and adherence to the job contract throughout the academic year.
- The period of employment begins September 10, 2010.
Sol coordinators are responsible for creating a learning environment that contributes to the student development process. We are looking for individuals with a strong commitment to the continued empowerment of underrepresented students and dedication to cultural awareness and sensitivity.
In addition to the specific duties and tasks of each Coordinator positions, these jobs require people who are willing to develop positive relationships with groups and individuals with multicultural backgrounds. Applicants who are comfortable in a diverse, multi-cultural environment and who enjoy learning from new and challenging experiences are usually well suited for these positions.
To be eligible for any position, applicant must have the following qualifications:
Ø Must be a currently enrolled student at Oregon State University for at least 6 academic credits.
Ø Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0, 2.5 preferred.
Ø Must be in good academic standing for the term prior to selection and during entire period of employment.
Ø Must have demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to traditionally underrepresented students (including, but not limited to, Asian/Pacific Islander, Asian-American, African, African-American, Black, Hispanic, Native American, Alaskan Native, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning and Intersexed students).
Ø Must have an understanding of the LGBTQQIA community and issues faced by the multicultural community
Hourly Rate: $10.00 per hour
Hours: 20 hours a week per position
