Description of Professional School Admission Process
Overview
The College of Business (COB) operates with a Professional School model of education. This means students complete pre-business courses before applying for admission to the Professional School program. A student must be admitted to the Professional School to register for upper-division courses within the academic programs offered by the COB.
Admission to the Professional School is a competitive process. This document explains the application and selection process the College uses to determine who will be accepted into the Professional School and its various academic disciplines.
Academic Disciplines
The COB has academic programs that prepare students for professional careers in a variety of academic disciplines. Currently these academic disciplines are Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Management, Management Information Systems, and Marketing Management. Students may also combine an option in International Business with any of the above disciplines by completing an exchange through the Arthur Stonehill International Business Exchange Program. Students designate their preferred academic discipline during the application process.
Eligibility
The requirements listed below must be met before a student is eligible to apply for the Professional School. Students become eligible during the quarter in which they expect to complete these requirements. The Application Quarter is the quarter in which the student submits the application for Professional School . The Admissions Quarter is the quarter immediately following the application quarter (excluding summer). Note that the student must be able to enroll in upper-division business courses in the Admissions Quarter. That is, if a student applies in spring quarter, they are expected to be at OSU and taking upper-division business courses during the next fall quarter.
The eligibility requirements are:
1. Admission to OSU as a pre-business major (note that the first term of attendance at OSU must be on or before the Admissions Quarter).
2. Completion of 90 credits acceptable to the university by the Admissions Quarter.
3. Compliance with COB Progression Standards. This requires earned grades of C- or better, and a minimum overall Business GPA (see definition below) of 2.5.
4. Pre-Business core courses GPA of 2.5 minimum (OSU grades only).
5. Completion of the pre-business core courses by the Admissions Quarter with a minimum overall Application GPA (see definition below) of 2.5. The following list comprises the pre-business courses:
o BA 101 Business Now
o BA 211 Financial Accounting [BA 211 and BA 212 at COCC]
o BA 213 Managerial Accounting
o BA 233 Legal Environment of Business or BA 230 Business Law I [BA 226 at COCC]
o BA 260 Introduction to Entrepreneurship [BA 250 at COCC]
o BA 276 Introduction to Statistical Inference or BA 275 Quantitative Business Methods [MTH 244 at COCC]
o BA 302 Business Management Processes
o COMM 111 Public Speaking - or - COMM 114 Argument and Critical Discourse [SP 111 at COCC]

o MTH 241 Calculus for Management and Social Science
o MTH 245 Math for Management, Life, and Social Sciences [MTH 243 at COCC]
o WR 222 English Composition, WR 323 English Composition, or WR 327 Technical Writing (new core only) [WR 122, 123 or WR 227 at COCC]
Application Timing
Applications to the Professional School are due by the end of the third week of the Application Quarter. Typically, students will apply for admission to the Professional School during the spring quarter in their sophomore year. Applications will also be accepted during summer, fall and winter quarters.
Application Requirements
A complete on-line application to the Professional School must be submitted by the application deadline. The on-line application includes identifying information, answers to specific questions regarding diversity and other supplemental information, and an agreement to comply with the ethics, student conduct, and academic honesty guidelines for Oregon State University and the COB. The application also includes selection of academic discipline (a first and second choice may be specified) and any additional information that is pertinent to the application. Applicants for the Accountancy major are also required to submit a resume.
Upon submission of the application, the student agrees to an automatic change of their academic records to reflect the college and major/discipline if granted admission to the Professional School and to an academic discipline (first or second choice).
Students will only be admitted to one academic discipline per application, and students may only submit one application per quarter.
Selection Process
Admission to the Professional School is based on the following criteria:
1. Submission of a complete on-line application with appropriate responses to all questions.
2. Minimum Business and Application GPA of 2.5. The GPAs are computed using grades earned within the pre-business courses and any additional business coursework completed as of the application deadline (that is, even if an application is submitted prior to the Application Quarter, the Application GPA will be based on the grades that have been recorded by the end of the third week of the Application Quarter)
· Transfer grades will be included and equally weighted within the Application GPA calculation. Note that it is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that transfer grades are received and recorded by the OSU Admissions Office prior to the application deadline.
· The Business GPA calculation includes only those grades earned at OSU.
· If a course is repeated, the grade earned on the most recent attempt to complete the course will be used in both GPA calculations. Note that the COB considers a withdrawal ("W") to be an attempt to complete the course.
· If a course was completed at OSU using the S/U grade option, the original grade earned (A-F) will be used in the Application GPA calculation.
· Transfer courses graded P or S (e.g. AP math) will not be included in the Application GPA calculation.
3. Acceptance into an Academic Discipline
· Each academic discipline has its own enrollment limits designed to make sure students in the area receive a quality educational experience. Applicants will be admitted into a specific academic discipline until the maximum allowable number for that particular discipline has been reached. Students admitted to an academic discipline will also be admitted to the Professional School.
· If more students want to enroll in a particular discipline than it has capacity, then some students will not be accepted into that academic discipline. If a student is not accepted into their first or second choice of academic discipline, then:
o If the student has earned a Business and Application GPA of 3.0 or above, they will be admitted to the Professional School as a "General Business" option. They must reapply to an academic discipline during the next application quarter. Students will not be allowed to graduate with a General Business option.
o If the student has earned a Business or Application GPA less than 3.0, the student will not be admitted to the Professional School and must reapply for admission in a subsequent quarter.
Admission
All admissions are conditional upon completion of the pre-business core courses and compliance with COB progression standards at the end of the Application Quarter. If the student does not successfully complete all pre-business core courses with a grade of C- or better, or is not fully compliant with the COB progression standards, then (1) they will not be admitted to the academic discipline or to the Professional School , (2) they will be removed from all upper-division Professional School courses in which they are registered, and (3) they will remain as a pre-business major.
Petitions. All petitions will be submitted on-line using the pro-school application
· Late Application. A petition may be submitted to have an application considered after the third week deadline, but prior to the end of the fifth week, of the current Application Quarter. The petition must explain why the application is late and must be approved by the Associate Dean for Academic Programs. Petitions for Late Application will not be considered after the end of the fifth week of the Application Quarter.
· Documented Disability. A student may petition to request an exception to eligibility requirements due to a learning disability that has been documented with the University Disability Access Services (DAS) office. The student will be required to authorize the DAS office to discuss their documentation with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs. Students receiving accommodations for disabilities may be considered for admission based on their academic performance over a minimum of the three most recent terms of accommodations. Request for such consideration, specifying the first term of accommodation, must be included in the petition.
· Pending Admission. Under unusual circumstances related to course scheduling difficulties, a student may be allowed to submit an application if they are scheduled to complete all but one required pre-business courses (for example, the student was not able to complete COMM 111 due to course access restrictions). Applicants who will be short one course should explain the circumstances in the petition. If the petition for Pending Admission is approved by the Associate Dean for Academic Programs, then the student's application will be evaluated during the current Application Quarter. If the student is accepted for admission to the Professional School , then the actual admission will be deferred for one academic quarter until the pending requirement is completed. If the pending requirement is not completed within one academic quarter, the student (1) will not be admitted to the academic discipline or to the Professional School , (2) will be removed from all upper-division Professional School courses in which they are registered, and (3) and will remain as a pre-business major.
· Taking Upper Division Professional School Courses as a Pre-Business Student. Pre-business students can petition to take selected upper division Professional School business courses. This process is for (1) students whose course schedules do not align directly with Professional School application deadlines, (2) students who have recently received accommodation for disabilities and the student's grades in the upper division courses will be used to calculate the pre-business Core GPA, or (3) community-college transfer students who have completed all eligibility requirements but missed the application deadline for admission during their first academic term at OSU. If the petition is approved by the Associate Dean for Academic Programs, a pre-business student may take a total of four upper division courses over two consecutive academic quarters.
To be eligible to take upper division courses, a pre-business student must:
1. Have completed all but two of the pre-business core courses with a C- or better and be in full compliance with the COB progression standards.
2. Satisfy all prerequisites for the courses to be taken.
3. Apply to the Professional School during the next Application Quarter unless they have recently received accommodation for disabilities.
Adding or Changing Academic Disciplines Once Admitted to the Professional School
After admission into the Professional School, a student may add an additional academic discipline (major or option) or change their academic discipline (major or option) by submitting an additional application. The student must meet all of the qualifications for eligibility and admission to the Professional School and for the new academic discipline (even though they are currently admitted to the Professional School ). The student may choose to revise their previous application, or submit an entirely new application.
If the student requests a change in academic disciplines, they will remain assigned to their current academic discipline until admitted to the new academic discipline. If the student is not fully compliant with the COB progression standards at the end of the Application Quarter, they will remain in their current academic discipline and will not be admitted to the new academic discipline.
