Sydney, Australia

The College of Business offers a Summer/Fall or Winter/Spring business exchange program at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia.

Background

The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) is one of the five largest universities in Australia with 21,000 students. Sydney has a population of approximately 4 million people with a very active youth culture. The university offers a wide variety of courses from various different colleges.

Most students live 10km from their campus. This is quite a distance to travel compared to distances at Oregon State. However, there are very few universities that have a one campus location, like most US universities. The students at UTS are very diverse. Over 40% are from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Academic Program

The academic program runs for Summer/Fall runs July through November and the Winter/Spring session runs from February to July.  All courses are taught in English. An example of a few course titles and their OSU credit equivalent are as follows:

UTS Course                                    OSU Course

24108 Marketing Foundations---------BA 390, Principles of Marketing

21128 International Business---------BA 347, International Business

24202 Consumer Behavior------------BA 492, Consumer Behavior

25300 Fund. of Business Finance------BA 340, Finance

21440 Management Skills--------------BA 452, Leadership & Team Building

One difference that should be noted is the size of the classes. The class room size is much larger than at OSU. The students are required to carry four to five subjects per term while at UTS. Each subject carries five credit hours at OSU. The term at UTS is longer, which takes some adjustment for scheduling of longer term papers that are due and the final exam given at the end of each term (about four hours long!!). This, as one can imagine, makes for a strict grading basis that is more difficult than in the US. The advantage to UTS is that any student can take credits that are directly transferable to the College of Business, without using up elective credits. Other programs may require a student to use their electives while studying abroad.

Eligibility

The program is open to all OSU Business majors who have a 2.75 GPA in the College of Business retention courses and have attained junior status at the time of participation. All applicants will be interviewed and acceptance will be based on academic preparation, personal motivation, and perceived adaptability.

Living Arrangements

Students are responsible for finding own housing which is always off-campus.  The housing office on the UTS campus has resources available.

Cost

Students pay tuition to OSU. OSU Student fees are waived. There is a $50 non-refundable application fee submitted with application and a $250 non-refundable program fee payable after acceptance. The main additional cost is airfare. Costs will vary depending on the exchange rate for U.S. dollars at the time of the program and personal spending habits.

Financial Aid

Most financial aid that students are eligible to receive (Guaranteed Student Loans, Pell Grants, Veteran's benefits) is applicable to this exchange program.  FINANCIAL AID IS NOT AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS UNTIL CLASSES BEGIN AT OSU. There are also study abroad scholarships available for those students with excellent academic records. Contact the Office of International Education (444 Snell Hall, 737-3006) for more information.   College of Business Scholarships are also available.
